On March 17 at 3 PM, a parade of trucks and concrete mixers from
SD Ireland Construction Corporation will be lining up and driving
through Burlington and Winooski area in celebration of St. Patrick’s
Day and finding a cure for cancer. Each year many people and children
enjoy the parade on Church Street.
The S.D. Ireland Construction Corporation has been doing their concrete
mixer parade for the past 20 years and are well known and anticipated
for this St. Patrick’s Day excursion.
This year the company, in cooperation with SD Ireland
Cancer Research Fund, decided to make it a more meaningful and worthwhile
experience by raising funds to support the Cancer Research being done
here in Vermont. We expect to double the participation this year because
more concerned people and families of cancer patients and survivors
are willing to go out onto the streets to participate.
Over the years, cancer specialist like Dr. David Krag of the University
of Vermont have been working hard to find new ways to treat cancer.
The research has gone from lab bench to bedside through the development
of a technique called Sentinel Node biopsy resulting in better management
of lymph nodes for breast cancer and malignant melanoma. This technique
is now being tested in colon cancer, lung cancer and several other
types of cancer.
We are very gratified that this method is now being applied to almost
all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients in the United States and
is sparing unnecessary surgery in about 100,000 patients per year.
This will dramatically lower the subsequent side effects from this
surgery.
